Port Orchard / South Kitsap

The Carlisle ferries commuters across Sinclair Inlet to and from Bremerton. Just south of the Manchester neighborhood is the Southworth terminal of Washington State Ferries.

Settled in 1854 by William Renton and Daniel Howard, who set up a sawmill here, Port Orchard is now the Kitsap County seat. Homes are relatively affordable in this southern portion of the county. Geographic features include Long Lake, a freshwater setting welcoming waterskiers and fishermen alike.  Nearby Olalla, an unincorporated community, is home to what was once known as Wilderness Heights, aka "Starvation Heights," a sanitarium operated by Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard, variously known in the early twentieth century as either ahead of her time or the very soul of evil.
